Best Seasons to Visit Santa Barbara

Fall is my favorite time in Santa Barbara. The weather is warm during the day and cool at night, and not so crowded as summer. Spring is great for seeing wildflowers and enjoying the outdoors. Summer is perfect for beach activities, and winter has mild but cooler weather and holiday vibes.

Getting to and Around Santa Barbara

Getting to Santa Barbara is easy. It’s a 2-hour drive from Los Angeles and 5 hours from San Francisco. You can also fly into Santa Barbara Airport. Taking the Pacific Coast Highway is a scenic way to get there, with amazing ocean views.

Once you are there, getting around is fairly easy. I suggest you walk as much as possible in the different areas but another great fun option is renting bikes or taking a bike tour. Last time I was there, we rented a moke (electric vehicle that looks like a jeep). SO FUN!

Start your day early with a beach stroll. The morning light is great for photos and you’ll avoid the crowds. Then, head to historic downtown for breakfast and sightseeing.

For a romantic Santa Barbara escape, beachfront resorts are perfect. The Ritz-Carlton Bacara has stunning ocean views and top-notch amenities. Hotel Californian mixes old charm with modern luxury located in the Funk Zone but close to the beach.

Boutique Hotels in Downtown

Downtown Santa Barbara is full of charming boutique hotels. The Kimpton Canary Hotel has a rooftop pool with amazing views. The Hotel Santa Barbara, with its Spanish Colonial style, is in the heart of shopping.

Reasonably Priced Options

Even if you’re budget conscious, Santa Barbara is worth visiting. The Moxy in the Funk Zone has stylish rooms at good prices. The Mason Beach Inn at the Beach is close to the beach and affordable. Hotel Santa Barbara offers a cozy stay without spending too much.

I love starting my Santa Barbara weekends with outdoor fun. The city mixes nature with city life perfectly. It’s great for those who wake up early and love adventure.

For a beautiful morning, I’ll head to the Santa Ynez Mountains. The trails offer amazing views of the coast. They’re perfect for hikers of all levels. It’s a top outdoor activity in Santa Barbara.

Beach yoga is another great choice for a calm morning. The sound of waves makes it peaceful. Local instructors lead group classes on the sand.

Food lovers will enjoy Santa Barbara’s breakfast spots. The Farmers Market on State Street on Saturdays 8am – 1pm is a must-visit. It showcases local produce and offers family-friendly experiences. You can try fresh fruits, artisanal bread, and coffee. My go to each time I visit, is Shoreline Cafe. It’s literally on the beach and can sit with your toes in the sand and the food is great. Another favorite is Chad’s for it’s “damn good breakfast” and Bloody Marys. There will be a line and no resys!!

And don’t miss out on Santa Barbara’s cafes and coffee shops. My favorite is a cozy spot downtown. Dune Coffee is a must stop. They serve coffee made from ethically sourced beans and homemade pastries. It’s a great place to plan your day while enjoying a cup of coffee. If heading to the historical museum, you can grab a great cup of coffee at Handlebar Coffee.

Santa Barbara’s Historic and Cultural Sites:

Traveling to Santa Barbara isn’t complete without seeing its rich history and culture. I’ve found some amazing places that mix learning with beauty. They’re perfect for those who love history and taking photos.

Old Mission Santa Barbara

The Old Mission Santa Barbara is my first stop. It’s known as the “Queen of the Missions.” Its beautiful architecture and gardens are a must-see. Guided tours here are great for learning the mission’s history, making it a family-friendly spot.

Santa Barbara County Courthouse

The Santa Barbara County Courthouse is your next stop. This Spanish-Colonial building always impresses me. The clock tower offers amazing views of the city. Visiting at sunset is a must for a memorable experience. In July and August, the USSB Art & Lecture Dept. host a free movie night at the courthouse. How fun to enjoy a movie under the stars at this historic site!

El Presidio State Historic Park

El Presidio State Historic Park is where I go to learn about Santa Barbara’s Spanish past. The park’s interactive exhibits and restored buildings bring history to life. It’s a favorite among kids, making it a great family outing.

For a city experience, try the Urban Wine Trail. It has over 20 tasting rooms near downtown. Start at Santa Barbara Winery, the oldest, then visit The Valley Project for a learning tasting with a chill vibe.

Santa Barbara’s food is as great as its wine. For fresh, farm-to-table meals, go to The Lark in the Funk Zone. for any meal. You will not be disappointed! Also, Lucky Penny (sister to The Lark) for pizza and more with a low key vibe. Seafood fans should visit Brophy Bros for fresh catches and views.

For a taste of local history, try La Super-Rica Taqueria. It’s a small taco stand loved by Julia Child.

Santa Barbara’s food scene comes alive at night. Loquita on State Street is authentic Spanish food and great for its lively vibe and shareable tapas. For a meal with ocean views, Convivo at the Santa Barbara Inn is the place. Their Mediterranean dishes are perfect for a romantic dinner. Highly recommend making reservations

SOhO Restaurant and Music Club is my favorite for live music. They feature both local and touring artists in a cozy setting. For a chill night, The Red Piano is the spot. It’s perfect for enjoying music and craft cocktails.

At night, Santa Barbara comes to life with lots of things to do. Families can have a lot of fun at the Santa Barbara Zoo or MOXI. For culture, check out the iconic Arlington Theatre or enjoy live music at small venues.

I can’t say enough about this town, suits all kinds of travelers. Couples can enjoy romantic sunsets and wine tastings. Families will love the beaches and attractions for kids. Solo travelers can hike, shop, or join tours.

To get the most out of your trip, plan but also be open to surprises. You might want to stay longer once you see Santa Barbara’s charm!!!
